Tri State Sculptors Association

Promoting public awareness and appreciation for sculpture in the VA, NC, and SC areas

2018: Greensboro, NC

40th Anniversary TSS Conference

Oct. 25-28

The 2018 Tri-State Sculptors 40th Annual Conference was held on Thursday, October 25th through Sunday October 28th in Greensboro, North Carolina. The conference was hosted by four of the area colleges and universities, UNC Greensboro, North Carolina A&T, Greensboro College and Guilford College, with cooperation and support from the Center for Visual Artists, Greensboro Parks and Rec. Many of the demonstrations and presentations were held at the Williams Steel Property at 1438 Elm -Eugene St. in Greensboro.

Everyone had a great time despite the rain and leaky roof. Nothing will stop a Tri-State Conference from being a success! This year there were blacksmithing  and MIG welding demonstrations.  Both of these were set up to allow the audience to participate by trying new techniques and ask the presenters for specific tips.  There was also a mobile glass-blowing exhibit which allowed attendees to make colorful glass pumpkins.  The professional glass artists walked participants through the gathering process, blowing on the pipe, shaping with a steel mold, and adding a decorative stem.  There was a mobile 3d digital fabrication van that showcased methods of 3d printing, cutting, and modeling.  A local community group of raku ceramic artists were invited to share their firing and glazing processes.  Reynolds Advanced Materials reps presented several rubber mold products and resin casting materials.  In addition there were many artist talks peppered throughout the days events, along with a member's exhibition at the Center for Visual Arts Gallery in downtown Greensboro.
